Are any (or all) of these three commonly held misconceptions about enterprise mobility holding your company back? Learn the truth and move forward with mobile solutions!
As a savvy IT professional, you know your company will benefit from adopting both outward- and inward-facing mobility services as part of your business strategy. But do you need help changing minds in the C-suite?
We’ve heard a lot of misconceptions about enterprise mobility applications. Here are some arguments you can use when you encounter three still surprisingly common myths.
Myth #1: Mobility services are still optional “add-ons.”
When the iPhone was new in 2007, people might have been forgiven for thinking mobile computing wouldn’t catch on. Today, there’s no denying it’s here to stay.
According to Pew Research, 64% of U.S. adults own a smartphone. Among those age 18-29, the number jumps to 85%; it barely dips, to 79%, among 30-49 year olds. According to comScore, 4 of 5 smartphone users shop on their phones.
Mobility doesn’t just matter for commerce; people are doing more work on the go. Smartphone use on the job rose from 37% in 2011 to 60% in 2012, for instance. In Q4 2015, 56% of total email opens were on a mobile phone or tablet.
Unless your enterprise thinks it can afford to ignore the millions of Americans who use mobile devices to make purchases and to do their jobs, you need to offer mobility services—the sooner, the better!
Myth #2: Mobility services can’t make a major impact on the bottom line.
Mobility can make quite a difference to your enterprise’s productivity and profitability.
For example: A study undertaken by software company TrackVia found that employees who used mobile business apps become more than one-third more productive (34%), and that companies gain an additional 240 work hours per year due to mobile working—that’s six extra weeks, at a value of $5114.
Mobility engineer Marty Resnick relates the story of one major financial firm that worked with various businesses to secure leases for them. The lease process took 30 days. But once this company started using mobility services—specifically, taking care of such tasks as accepting applications and delivering quotes via a tablet computer—that month-long process dropped to two days.
When your business adopts mobile solutions, you get more done in less time, which means your bottom line goes up as your expenditures of energy and money go down.
Myth #3: Mobility services won’t help our staff do their jobs.
While having apps through which customers can access your business’ goods or services is obviously important, our society’s migration toward mobile computing is changing how businesses work internally, too.
As mentioned earlier, more people are working on the go. Consequently, more companies are transitioning to a “BYOD” model: Bring Your Own Device. Gartner Research reports that while the trend is most pronounced in midsize and large organizations, smaller enterprises, too, are taking advantage of it in order to increase productivity. Gartner VP David Willis explains, “The benefits of BYOD include creating new mobile workforce opportunities, increasing employee satisfaction, and reducing or avoiding costs.”
Because staff members access your business’ email, databases, file servers and other IT assets on their personally owned smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, you don’t have to worry about large hardware expenditures in order to take advantage of internal mobility services. Granted, BYOD is not without challenges, compliance and security issues chief among them; but with careful planning, employee-oriented enterprise mobile apps can add as much value to your business as customer-oriented apps can.
